My setting of the well-known French tune, Picardy, (Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, #198 in the Lutheran Book of Worship) originated during my days as choir director at Lutheran Church of Christ the Redeemer in Minneapolis, and was accompanied by piano, oboe, and a small wind chime. This anthem was published in 1998 while I was organist at Nativity Lutheran Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota, where I shared many wonderful musical collaborations with David Livingston, recorder player extraordinaire. This piece has been used widely in both Advent and Christmas services, and also makes a nice communion anthem. The recorder part may be played on flute, oboe, or other C instrument.
