"I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved, and free" are the opening words of this fine communion text by Brian Wren. Combines eucharistic language with themes of unity, community, and love. Also suitable for general use.
This is a quiet communion anthem based on the 15th century German hymn by Johann Cruger, Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele, #203 and #224 in the Lutheran Book of Worship. The first verse uses women's voices quietly "oohing" the hymn tune melody over a pastoral piano accompaniment, followed by a second verse with a new text by Susan Cherwien which begins: "Silence, awe, and glad surrender greet this meal of solemn splendor". The first verse can be omitted if you need a shorter anthem for communion distribution.
My new choral setting of the hymn tune Bread of Peace, by Carlton Young, with text by Shirley Erena Murray. This hymn is #466 in the ELCA's new hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW).
My setting of the well-known French tune, Picardy, (Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, #198 in the Lutheran Book of Worship) originated during my days as choir director at Lutheran Church of Christ the Redeemer in Minneapolis, and was accompanied by piano, oboe, and a small wind chime. This anthem was published in 1998 while I was organist at Nativity Lutheran Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota, where I shared many wonderful musical collaborations with David Livingston, my friend and colleague, as well as recorder player extraordinaire. This piece has been used widely in both Advent and Christmas services, and also makes a nice communion anthem. The recorder part may be played on flute, oboe, or other C instrument.
My setting of this well-loved spiritual uses a quiet piano accompaniment. The piece begins with a counter-melody on the text "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, kyrie eleison, O Lord, have mercy on me", which is interspersed and then combined with the traditional African-American spiritual tune.
I found the text for this communion piece in the Lutheran Book of Worship, #220, set to the tune Tender Thought. "O Jesus, blessed Lord, to you my heartfelt praise and thanks are due." An earnest prayer of thanksgiving for communion distribution, with quiet piano accompaniment and a second verse which can be sung a cappella.
