A piece for Advent, with the refrain "Oh, Come, Lord, come, here on earth your will be done" which incorporates verse text by Charles Wesley from the hymn Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus. Can be used in general for Advent season, or as a call to worship. Use the optional percussion for a little extra flavor.

My setting of a fine song composed by David Haas, published in the Gather hymnal from GIA in Chicago. I used this piece in various forms as part of Advent Lessons and Carols services in recent years. The refrain "Come, Lord Jesus, come" makes a great beginning/call to worship for an Advent worship service. The choral score includes oboe part in C and optional clarinet part in Bb.

My setting of the well-known French tune, Picardy, (Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, #198 in the Lutheran Book of Worship) originated during my days as choir director at Lutheran Church of Christ the Redeemer in Minneapolis, and was accompanied by piano, oboe, and a small wind chime. This anthem was published in 1998 while I was organist at Nativity Lutheran Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota, where I shared many wonderful musical collaborations with David Livingston, my friend and colleague, as well as recorder player extraordinaire. This piece has been used widely in both Advent and Christmas services, and also makes a nice communion anthem. The recorder part may be played on flute, oboe, or other C instrument.

My setting of this African-American spiritual for children's choir includes an optional descant part for the final refrain.

In 1996, I asked poet Susan Palo Cherwien of Minneapolis to compose an anthem text directed toward the theme of "light" in the season of Advent, and this anthem was published in 1997 by Kjos Music. Susan's lovely text, entitled As the Dark Awaits the Dawn, has also been set as a hymn by Carl Schalk under the same title.

I have always loved this 13th century plainsong melody, Divinum Mysterium. The hymn can be found in the Lutheran Book of Worship, #42. My setting uses a metrical piano accompaniment over which the chant melody is sung. Often used as a Christmas piece, this hymn anthem is also very effectively used in the Advent season.

A new tune replaces the old Swedish folk melody of this well-known text found in the Lutheran Book of Worship, #26. A light but rhythmic piano part makes this anthem a good choice for a choir that likes to mix tradition with innovation. Often used during the Advent season, this piece also works well for Palm/Passion Sunday.

"Come Christ, to waiting earth, and bring your future now to birth." The last lines of this wonderful text by Susan Palo Cherwien will bring you to the brink of Christmas. Particularly well-suited for the 4th Sunday of Advent, or the Advent season in general, the theme of Christ's love coming to a world filled with conflict and war also makes this anthem suitable for general use.

"Advent means to wait, get ready, it's coming!" is the refrain of this children's choir anthem, co-written and arranged with Karla Singer, children's music director at Nativity Lutheran in St. Anthony, Minnesota. A fun piece for the younger set which helps teach the meaning of the Advent season.
